Boeing considers the 757 alternative model or the new largest narrow body machine

The Civil Aviation Resource Network compiled Bloomberg News, Boeing is considering the development of a largest narrow-body machine to fill the market gap after the 757 is discontinued.

There is a product gap between the largest model in the Boeing single-aisle aircraft 737 and the smallest model in the 787, and it is increasingly important for Boeing to fill this gap.

Boeing’s chief aircraft sales officer, John Wojick, said the new aircraft will be 20% larger than the 757 and 20% longer. It will be the longest narrow-body aircraft available. The narrow body is the main force of the global fleet. Boeing has been closely watching the trends in the aviation industry, considering the successor to the 757.

The Boeing 757 can travel 200-243 people in a typical two-cabin layout with a maximum range of 3,900 nautical miles (7,200 km). In the United States, airlines often place the 757 on a busy interstate route. It has more people than the 737, but it is less risky than a wide-body machine if the ticket sales are not ideal.

But developing a plane larger than the 757 is also risky. Wojick will not be available until the mid-2020s at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) conference this week.

Wojick said Boeing is uncertain whether sales of new aircraft are strong enough to support billions of dollars in R&D investment. There is also a potential risk of weakening the 737 Max family, which will be unveiled in 2017.

According to Adam Pilarski, deputy general manager of aviation consultancy Avitas Inc, caution is still necessary.

He believes, first of all, it is unclear whether the airline is willing to spend more than the Airbus A321neo catalogue price ($124.4 million) to buy a brand new aircraft (the A321neo is already a popular 757 replacement). Secondly, the biggest selling point of saving fuel consumption is now not so popular.
